This photo was recently taken by redditor Fidget08 in Dubuque, Iowa. It’s claimed to show a tree that has had its bark blown off by a lightning strike. The uploader also added this:

This happened in my hometown and I was going to work this morning and saw it. Mother fucking nature man.

Well said.

Why Are Barns Painted Red? It Comes Down To Nuclear-Fusion

Red Barn

Although barns have changed a whole lot in the last couple decades as far as building materials and design go, prior to this barns had been built with your standard truss framing since the mid 19th century. And throughout all this time, the structures would typically be painted red with white trim without much differentiation. Ever wonder why that would be?

The simple answer is that, like most other things, it comes down to cost: red paint has always been cheaper than the other colours. But that’s where things become less simple and way more neato-gang.

Australia Rolls Out Awesome ‘Water-Curtain Stop Signs’

tunnel delay

Sydney has had a difficult time keeping oversized trucks from entering tunnels that have been recently constructed. They’ve set up two separate automated flashing signs to tell these drivers to stop leading up to the tunnels, but yet they were still encountering 2 or 3 incidents per month. So they teamed up with a company called LaserVision to design and build a stop sign that would be practically impossible for a truck driver to miss.

The final product is pretty awesome and is sure to do the trick.

Watch the largest meteorite impact ever recorded on the moon

Below is a video made my NASA Science which shows yesterdays unusually large moon impact by a meteorite, which by the way ‘only’ measured less than half a metre across. Despite the seemingly diminutive stature of this meteorite, it was estimated to have created a crater 20m wide, struck the surface with the equivalent force of 4 tons of TNT, and created a flash that could be seen by the naked eye here on Earth.

Fair Warning: Unfortunately the people at NASA haven’t learnt much from Chris Hadfield, who returned back to land on Monday after 5 months on the ISS, since the video and narration especially are both incredibly drab.

3 US Cities That Have The Highest Accident Rates

Today we bring you a sponsored guest post by ‘tinyblogger’:

Statistics are not just numbers jumbled together for no reason. Statistics are used in gathering data to prove or disprove a theory. In the case of car accidents, statistics have a direct impact on driver insurance rates for specific reasons. People who live in the cities with the highest accident record will pay a higher premium than those living in the safest cities. Prior to moving to a new city, it is wise to check the car accident statistics and find out how it will affect auto insurance rates.

Washington D.C. Washington D.C. is the most likely place to be involved in a car accident in the United States. The time of day does not appear to have an effect on the high volume of traffic that is flowing through. This may be the cause of the high probability of a vehicle accident as well as the number of people rushing to get in or out of the area. Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. Thousands of tourists pour through the city to visit the many historical sites, get a glimpse of the political process, and attend festivities. Hundreds of political figures flow in and out of the city as well. Traffic congestion is a likely scenario for anyone who attempts to drive into the historical and politically driven city. Residents of this city are more than twice as likely to be involved in a car accident. Insurance premiums average to more than $2000 a year.

Baltimore, MD It may not be a surprising fact that the second most likely city in America to be involved in a motor vehicle accident is Baltimore. It is directly connected to Washington, D.C. and a huge portion of the traffic in Baltimore travels to and from Washington, D.C. on a daily basis. The same traffic problems that exist in Washington D.C. also exist in Baltimore. Baltimore is one of the most visited cities in the state of Maryland. It is the home of the M&T Stadium for football and baseball fans. The traffic produced by both sports is tremendous and are excellent for area businesses. It is also one of the many reason it is likely residents will be involved in a traffic accident. Drivers in this city are at a 90% higher risk for a traffic accident than in all other parts of the United States. Insurance in the state of Maryland are among the highest in the country.

Glendale, CA The population of Glendale is nearly 400,000 less than the previously mentioned cities, but, that does not alter the fact that it is third on the list for the number of car accidents people are involved in. Glendale is directly connected to Los Angeles and that may be the reason for the high rate of traffic accidents. The increased risk for a vehicle accident in this city is approximately 80%. Drivers are always at risk for a traffic accident. The odds of being involved in one are 30% no matter what city the driver may be travelling in. People who live in an area with elevated risk factors will pay higher premiums because of it. The best plan to lower insurance rates as well as the risk for an accident is to drive cautiously, obey traffic signs and signals, and to take extra precautions during inclement weather and road construction. Jessica Strayers has worked as a roadside assistance service manager for the past 5 years and enjoys blogging in her spare time. Jay & Dan Leaving TSN Sportscentre (+ video)

By now, if you’re a fan of sportscentre in the morning, you’ve no doubt heard that our beloved Jay & Dan are leaving TSN. In fact the news is 2 weeks old…guess this has been sitting in the ‘draft’ bin here at wtfeed for a while. In any case these two characters who have changed the way we watch sports highlights in the morning  are on to bigger and better things in the sports world – Hollywood.

Jay & Dan created a nationwide following by injecting the day-to-day sports highlights with their unique style of comedy, helping make TSN the most watched sports news program along the way.

“Every single day I went into work at TSN, I knew I was going to have fun.  It’s a unique and rare work environment that I never took for granted.  I am forever indebted to TSN for letting me be a part of it for the past 10 years,” said Dan O’Toole.  “Also, if it wasn’t for TSN, I would never have been paired with Jay.  The fact that TSN took a chance and let us do our own thing every night on SPORTSCENTRE is something we will always be thankful for.  Even as we embark on this new adventure, we will forever remain just a tall, lanky kid from Athabasca, Alberta, and a pig farmer from Peterborough, Ontario.”

So to honour our two Sportscentre goofballs, I bring you Jay & Dan’s Top Ten moments:

Old Skool Advertisements…You Be The Judge

ad_3Today on WTF, we’re bringing it back old skool!

Ah, the good ol’ days…smoking was a “luxury” everyone could afford, racism was thriving, and women knew where their place was!  How we could have moved on from that great era, I’ll never know.  But I guess if these brand names ever wanted to make some cash money in today’s world, they would have had to move on with the times and mind their P’s and Q’s.  After all, you can’t lure the masses (especially hard-nose women who may not get the joke) if they can’t bear your advertisements!

What better way to look back at how awesome all of those things were, than by taking a look at their advertisements?  Below you will find a gallery of some of the classic ads that would certainly not bode well in today’s world.

Take a look at the good, the bad, and the downright hilarious!
